General Discussion / Re: maybe cogen is resurging?
February 19, 2021, 04:48:47 AM
It was 12 here one morning last week Friday or Saturday. 23 this morning at 4:00am. This is in Tennessee! We are supposed to be in the South, which communicates visions of a warm temperate climate. Had so much ice Wednesday, on top of the ice from earlier in the week, we lost power for about 16 hours. I had the genny prepped but never did start it up :-[.
And that's the way it is here in Beautiful Baxter, Tennessee.
Maybe I will finally get the cogen finished up and operational, heck it's only been what 4 years?

Thanks Henry, more heat for CHP is what I am after. Primarily, this is not a CHP setup per say, but more of a backup generator setup
that just happens to be in proximity to my cobbled up woodboiler. Being sort of a try it and see what happens sort of guy, yeah this whole thing has gotten out of hand.
I will someday, if I live long enough, post pictures of the monstrosity.

Ok so to cut to the chase, I want to run a catalyst on the exhaust of my Changfoid and Listeroid diesel gennys. The idea is to raise exhaust heat and maybe clean up a little of the soot?
Will a junkyard run of the mill car catalyst work on a diesel?  Will I have to have some sort of regen cycle, yes I do know that regens are to burn out the DPF primarily.
My old Dodge had a catalyst with no DPF, so I am assuming that would work for me.
And I don't want to create a new problem with the implementation of the cat.
Just throwing this up against the wall to see what sticks.

I do hope every one had a joyful Christmas and good family time! We all enjoyed ourselves over at the Daughter and Son in law's place over breakfast and gifts.
My little Granddaughter wanted a cute little play kitchen from Sam's club, so of course Grandad and Granny ordered it with great anticipation to see how she liked it.
Well, it was a big hit but so help me, it took the Son in law and I 5 hours to assemble the darn thing. Some dude some where is laughing his ass off over
Fathers every where pulling their hair out over this thing. They did have a very helpful YouTube video ( NOT)on assembly that was IIRC in 8 parts with no dialog I don't think,
my eyes glazed over and my mind went blank after about 3 minutes of the first one.
May Peace and Joy follow everyone!

General Discussion / Re: Hi Gang It's Llloyd

Lloyd, life is simply not fair, or a respecter of persons. I lost my baby sister, 6 years my junior, to the big C this year. I have to keep telling myself that God is merciful, even if we don't always understand His plan. I do hope you have peace and contentment in the days ahead.
Thoughts and prayers, Ron.

Hallelujah! I had called Ferguson supply here locally, and they were clueless, sent me to a propane supply!
Just what I need. Thanks Henry!

Bob I understand, the reasons that I keep the house that we are in is that 1. We want room for the Kids. 2. We can't sell it because of the damn sinkhole that opened up literally 2 feet from the front corner of the house. No I'm not kidding. I have a 70 year old house that 2 years ago a F*&%ing sinkhole decided to open up next to it. I am on a ridge for the Love Of God. How does that happen?
So, making the bet of a bad situation, I'm a gonna die here! Hey, at least I got a heck of a property tax break. It's really a small sinkhole as sinkholes go, a 5 gallon bucket a year will fill it up. So far.
I look forward to your continuing discourse on CHP.
As for your political career, Mark Twain said that it does no good to argue with fools (or maybe it was idiots ) they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Well, I know that it has been quite some time, but does anyone have a source for weld in bungs? I don't know what else to call them. Threaded inserts to weld in the 500 gallon converted propane tank to make pipe connections?

Hey Bob!!!
You will never know how glad I am to see that you have your life back! I have missed you on here and I am sure many others have as well.
The woodshed is finally showing signs of progress, I have 3 walls up and the roof on, I still need to finish things up, insulate paint and get the gensets installed, but I am making progress.
I am doing a Tarm boiler with an 1115/15kw set plumbed in to the 500 gallon heat storage tank for cooling and exhaust heat capture and an 8-1 with a 7.5 st head for use in the winter and at night. Without you and the microcogen forum, I would never have gotten even this far. The great Walla Walla Xing Dong is still sitting out in the garage just waiting for a power outage. My Wife even loves the thing! We had an outage a few years ago, we were sitting in the dark, waiting for the power to come back on, and she said "Ok, I'm bored go start the generator. It feels good to be the only house in sight with the lights on.
You and this forum is what got me started on the path to "enlightenment".
Glort, I hear you on the damn cat issue! My wife is a cat person. I think they should be terminated with extreme prejudice. Cats are nasty creatures, with acid for piss.
I just don't get the whole cat for pet thing, why would one keep an animal that urinates and defecates in ones home?

Thanks again, Ron.

I have spent many a night reading here when I would have been  otherwise bored. And thanks to all I have learned a lot! Yes, it has been pretty dead around here and like many others I find myself spending time at the LEF as of late.
That being said I would hate to think that all the experience documented here could possibly be lost.
Sure I will pony up 20 bucks again this year if only for nostalgia, just let me know where to send it.
Ron.

Sorry I still can't spell for crap on this thing.

Holy Crap!! 21 or 27 weiner dogs!!!!!!! I would lose my mind. Chickens on the other hand are very productive and mostly quiet animals. Well, I do have seven out in the yard, and  five guineas, so am I biased?

Well I am back again with absolutely no progress to report. I do have a slab and studwalls are partly up, but we have all been under the weather at one time or another since the first of the year. Flu, Bronchitis, Pneumonia, for me and the wife. Then when they did my chest X-rays, they found a 9mm nodule on one of my lungs that the CAT scan ruled as a "nipple shadow"! Aw hell come on it was funny! I thought it beat the crap out of cancer.
On a better note, I have a line on a bunch of solar panels and associated electronic bits and pieces. IIRC there is 10kw worth that some guy didn't like the look of on his house, so he had it removed and sold it all to an acquaintance of mine  for cheap.
I'll be back later with an update.
Ron.
