Do you supose they are charging it with a 6/1 and a modified st head for dc charging? and using wvo in the lister? ;D

ST and STC generators / Re: building a generator
March 21, 2010, 09:14:36 AM
Good points Bob the air compressor draws 21 amps at 240 volts running and the welder draws up to around 20 amps at 240 as well so the loads will not be that hard I know the engine is overkill but hey I own it I will put some thought to the Governor idea

yeah but I am on a tight budget right now and looking for a cheep way to run these 2 items. I figure once I get the spare change I could buy a small diesel from surplus center and the st head would still be good for that purpose? so really it would not cost me anything to use the v8 I have tons of parts and radiators and everything for the v8.

ST and STC generators / building a generator
March 21, 2010, 07:03:28 AM
Ok I am thinking of embarking on a new project. I have a 305 chevy v8 engine that runs super. I would like to mate it with a 12-15kw generator head to run my welder and my air compressor where I am off grid these 2 items are a problem for me.

My thoughts where to belt drive the head with 2 belts of the crank pulley on the 305. I also did not think I would mess with a Governor as I believe the v8 will carry either one of my loads no problem with a fixed rpm. My questions would be what are your thoughts on the 2 belts will it work ok? or does someone know of an off the shelf way to connect the st head to the flywheel? It seems like an awful good way to run these 2 items without any hardship and good use of a v8 engine I have laying around.

Bruce I have all three models of the Classic controller from MidNite Solar. these 3 beta units are beta units I have been testing for MidNite for over a year. The units will be available to the public around may 2010. I was quite impressed that I got no display garbling or anything from the straight rectified ac. to be fair the ac was from the power co not a generator but I don't know how much difference that will make? I do intend to experiment with ac from my generator soon I should have updated software next week that will allow me to pick the target voltage I did not want the classic to do a sweep like it would on PV so I had to be careful. This is another nice feature software can be updated via usb cable or even over the home network or internet.

Bob what would you be looking to get? I may be interested in experimenting although I did hook 120 vac to my rectifiers and fed that into my 250 volt classic charge controller and it seemed to work fine I didn't push it past 40 amps output yet I wanted to get some software updated to give me a U pick mode first I was running in standard solar tracking mode.

ST and STC generators / Re: another st charger option

I will try feeding my 250 volt unit with power through a rectifier and give an update. when I get 5 minutes.

two points come to mind here. one is the transformers in the previous thread where rated for 30 amps and he had 80 volts so that would turn into almost 60 amps at 48 volts unless I am missing something here I haven't followed that thread real close as I plan to rectify 120 vac then go through a classic.

Second point I will have to ask our engineer how hard it is to take a signal and trigger a lower output current we do have 2 aux relays on this thing and one can be configured for an input.

Are the transformers really rated in max watts or do they have a max current? my logic is here you will be doing half the amps at the toroid's that you will be doing going into a 48 volt bank. Also for an interesting project like this we at MidNite solar may put you on a short list of First run pre production units for a reduced cost. Shoot me a quick pm with a few highlights of the project and I will see it gets to the rite people. This program was designed for industry professionals but we intend to open it for a few interesting cases to help us make a better mouse trap.

I should also state there will be 3 voltage limits a 150vdc a 200vdc and a 250vdc here is a little primer on the Classic's progress.  http://www.midnitesolar.com/pdfs/officialMidNiteSolarClassicwatch.pdf

PM generators / PMG who's to buy
February 14, 2010, 01:00:59 PM
Ok I think I am in the market for a PMG for my 6/1 here is my question Georgia generator has 3.5kw and 6.5kw both are 650 bucks then George at utterpower has a 3kw for 699 with pulley and shipping both designs seem different.

Which one would you buy?

Hey guys I am a Beta tester for Midnite solar's Classic I have 3 running here. I can assure you they are as efficient as anything else out there while operating in buck mode. They have some great features and more to come the first great feature is the ability to just upload software to them vie usb or ethernet. They assure me they sill be as efficient in boost mode but we have yet to get that far in testing. They have 24 units going out in a week and then they will build a production run shortly after that. I believe the first of may they will be available.

Ok after reading Bill Rodgers book I think that guy missed a few point's but it sure does seem about that easy from reading Bills work. The biggest thing is to wire the start windings backwards. Now to devise a fail safe to disconect it in the event of a power failure?

I ordered the book and lister cd I never did here from anybody but it showed up here 3 days later. The book is worth every penny and I just may venture down the Induction motor rd one day now that I fully understand the workings.

My gen head came from cmd and looks similiar and whines like a stuck pig always has? I have just ignored it for now I am sure it will fix itself  ;D

I appreciate all the comments I did decide to build a lean to on the side of the garage for Put Put she has internal balancing I believe it has the small wheels with circles cut out not spokes it came from CMD. It lived its first 2 years on a wood skid made of 3 8*8's 8ft long planked with 3 inch hemlock planks and it never moved but I will keep the mr x method of balancing in mind I think I am going to use some sort of wood system again maybe 5 8*8's 2 going one way berried in the ground and then 3 the other way on top of them planked over.
