ST and STC generators / building a generator
March 21, 2010, 07:03:28 AM
Ok I am thinking of embarking on a new project. I have a 305 chevy v8 engine that runs super. I would like to mate it with a 12-15kw generator head to run my welder and my air compressor where I am off grid these 2 items are a problem for me.

My thoughts where to belt drive the head with 2 belts of the crank pulley on the 305. I also did not think I would mess with a Governor as I believe the v8 will carry either one of my loads no problem with a fixed rpm. My questions would be what are your thoughts on the 2 belts will it work ok? or does someone know of an off the shelf way to connect the st head to the flywheel? It seems like an awful good way to run these 2 items without any hardship and good use of a v8 engine I have laying around.

I am in the process of moving my lister to its final resting place and have always had hard start issues I have the electric start and if it is below 50 deg F it just wont start without a shot of either. Here is a video that shows what mine does this is a manual start but mine acts the same way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E--y-vJDP3o&feature=related

What would everyone recommend I look for when I move Thump Thump to her new home? I have checked the timing and it seems ok maybe bad rings?

I have had thoughts of putting my power line 6/1 in the garage seems like a nice easy spot for it and all the waste heat will heat the garage. my question is how would you hook it to the floor? I thought I had seen someone use a rubber horse stall mat and bolt down threw it?

Ok I know that i can spin an induction motor a little faster then its nameplate and it will backfeed the grid. My real questions are Where can one find a good deal on an induction motor and what HP would you need to look for to dump say 3kw back. Also is there anything special one needs? I am under the impression you just spin the thing up and when it is at speed throw the switch and then put the power to it? I talked to my local Power Co and he was ok with it as part of my grid tie system as long as I could exhibit that it will stop flowing power when the grid is disconnected.

I understand that I will not save money and this isn't the goal. just an experiment with an odd purpose
