OK problem solved, BUT I don't know why.
The generator was wired correctly. I checked my leads to my disconnect breaker. Looked for some sort of short and could not find any thing. I have made sure that all connection IE L1, L2, L0 and the wires that are tied together but not connected to any outside wire are good a separated. It is possible/probable that something was shorting before I unwound all my electrical tape to check the leads. I will get some of that rubber tape when I go to town tomorrow and really insulate the leads.

The Lima Mac (280 frame) does not have a terminal block in the dog house. It does not have much of a dog house.
Right now the wires are hanging outside the dog house.

Brucem.

Thanks for your help on this

Brucem,

Thanks for your thoughts. L1 to L2 240v, L1 to N 120v, L2 to N 120v, N to G 120v,  not sure about L1 to G and L2 to G Will check in the morning.

I will then check my gen wiring and see if/where I screwed up.
Thanks

Thanks for your comments on this.
Here in the Bahamas, and our electrical code follows the Canadian code The neutral and ground is supposed to be connected in one and only one place. It is usually at the main disconnet at the meter box. This is also a US code requirement.

Many European codes do not ground the neutral and leave it floating.
Inverters for RV units normally would not have neutral and ground interconneted and have a floating neutral.
Most low cost inverters keep ground and neutral issolated. This one of the reasons that they recommend NOT hooking up to a house panel.
All that being said, I will double check that I made the proper wiring connections when I reconfiured for 120/240 and keep you all posted.

Again thanks for your input.

I have just reconfigured my Lima MAC from 120 volts only (Delta) to 240/120. (Zig zag). The Lima unit is a twelve wire unit.
The generator is now producing 120/240.
I have a 10 amp breaker between the neutral and ground on my main panel in the main house. (I wanted to be able to issolate the ground should I need to use my cheapo backup inverter that reqiures an issolated ground or it will be smoked and kaput).
My problem is that now the breaker trips. I am getting 120 volts between neutral and ground. When I try to ground the neutral via the breaker then gen bogs down and the breaker trips.
I am now running with a floating ground.

I did not have this problem when wired delta and 120 volts only.
Any ideas as to what is happening?

I have a Servel Refridgerator with a small freezer. LP gas. It works very well here in the Bahamas. It is just small. I think the whole thing is about 9 cuft. Similar in size to what is used in RV mobile homes.
LP gas useage is not bad. I don't know for sure because I used LP for waterheating and clothes dryer as well as stove. I use about 100lb cylinder every 6 weeks or so.

Here is my 2 cents worth on this.
Many years ago when I was working with a general contractor we had the guy across the street build us a 4 kw diesel generator. The generator guy was my best friend at the time. He used a Izuzu 10 hp @ 1800 engine or there abouts and attached a Fedelity pancake generator to it. Load tested it with 55 gallon water barrell with a bunch of water heater elements installed. He could wire it up so that he could check 120 volt 240 volt and combinations of loads. The generator worked great and started blowing black smoke at about 6 KW.

Off to the jobsite. It bogged down with two skil saws running. Back to the work shop. The generator checked out fine. Checked the ski saws. Could not find a problem there. After two or three goes with this he changed out the gen head for believe it or not with a Leroy Summor (sp) unit and all was fine. For some reason that Fedelity unit could not handle inductive loads and all the loads were inductive. So it was a power factor issue. In one of my Lister manuals, long lost, they talked about adding capaciitors across motor loads to correct the power factor.

Rom,

Good to see that you are keeping busy.

Just received what I think is a st 1 or sr 1 lister gen set from Nassau. I pieces but "said" to be working. I will take some photos in the morning and then try and figure out how to post them.
The unit is not mine. My new neighbour found it in Nassau and I will help him get it going.

how about these?

Prices look almost too good to be true.

Does anyone have the dimensions for this? I need to make one and I am wondering is I just trace the outline of the bottom bearing holder, would that work? or do I have to add a bit for the flange of the bearing shells to stop them from shifting (Rotating). I just replaced the crankshaft on my old VA, (aircooled 8/1) and now I need a shim otherwise the crank siezes up when tightening the connection rod bolts.
Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Off grid??

Been off grid since 2001.
About 2 miles from the grid. About $60k to bring power in.
I have all the conviencies I need.
1kw solar power which is fine for winter months and no need for A/C.
internet via wirelss connection
Vonage phone works great
Diesel back up
Big John Deer 19 kw genset
Lister VA 4.25 KW in mothballs right now waiting on a new crank shaft from India.
Power is so expensive here in the Bahamas (Abaco) that I am sure I am ahead of the game on power costs. Never done a cost calulation as the excerise would be redudant antway.

I don't know anything about GM90's but it looks like the filter is installed where the vent case vent would be on a Lister/Listeroid.
If I am right the set up would mess up the vent/vacume system?

General Discussion / Re: Why are you here?
January 27, 2011, 05:50:12 PM
I am not sure how I got here. For the past two years or more I some how stumbled onto the LEF site, could never get registard and then found this site. Been here ever since.

Been messing around with engines as long as I can remember. My Dad was quite handy fixing things and he bought and developed an island of the Abaco (Bahamas) coast in the late 1950's.This was a vacantion home that we visited about three times a year. I was about 7 or 8 years old. We had a couple Windchargers (12volt)to try and keep a battery bank charged up along with a gas powered, I think Onan 12 volt out put charger. Propane and kerozene refridgerators, Seagull outboards, B&S inboard aircooled engines in old sailing dingeys.
The windchargers were pretty basic with  exposed slip rings and copper "Brushes" to allow the thing to swing in the breeze. The regulator was the old contact type like cars had before alternators became common.
The whole setup was not at all suitable for our climate here with so much salt air. The windchargers either did not work do to corroded contacts or the regulator crapped out do to corrossion. The batteries were either sufided up or close to exploding due to over charging. I can remember having to climb to tower with sand paper to clean the slip rings or change brushes inside the windcharger. My older brother, by three years, was chicken to go up there, affraid of heights.
In about 1961 or 1962 he bought the first Lister VA and about a year later he bought a second and these where alternated in use up til about 1986.

My dad died in 1966 and I did most of the repairs and maintenance on these generators, when I could.
We had outboards lawnmower etc and I was the guy to try and keep them going.

More later.
